At the beginning of Wednesday's contest, the 13 contestants each introduced themselves Links of London 3D D Charm, then answered a random question from the judges. They previously had submitted essays titled "What my fair means to my community" and completed private interviews with the judges. Finalists answered a question about service to the community before a selection was made.
Although the recipient's name won't be announced prior to Redding's visit Links of London Letter N Charm, Welk said the person has been active with the fair for about 30 years and has held several offices on the board.
As queen, Strawser receives $100 and a $500 scholarship, and her sponsor, the Tri-M music organization Links of London Duck Charm, will get $50. Kauffman receives $50 and a $250 scholarship, and her sponsoring club, Pioneer Interact, will get $35.
The queen contestants waited patiently, taking their turn in the ring when the cattle show ended.
Besides the queen competition, Wednesday's events included lamb Links of London Sweetie Bracelet with Rose Quartz Bracelet, swine and beef shows Links of London Letter G Charm, an auction of baked goods, a pet show Links of London Mini Dog Charm, a tractor parade, an antique tractor pull and a tug of war.
State Secretary of Agriculture Russell C. Redding is scheduled to join the fair crowd this morning.
By the time the fair queen contenders lined up for the competition at 7:30 p.m. Links of London 3D S Charm, a hazy, almost-full moon was shining down on the outdoor show ring. The good weather didn't last long, however, as the moon quickly disappeared behind a thick layer of clouds and lightning flashed in the distance.
It was worth the wait for Sophie Strawser, who left the ring with a crown, a bouquet of roses and a trophy.

As thunder rolled through the area and fields quickly turned to mud, many people in the West Lampeter crowd filtered into the nearby indoor ring, where beef showmen handled increasingly fractious cattle.
Strawser, daughter of Tim and Rose Strawser of Lancaster, is a senior at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. She has been attending the West Lampeter fair "since before I can remember" and has entered many art and baked goods contests over the years.
There will be an auction of fruit and vegetable entries at 7 p.m. Saturday.
First runner-up is Haley Kauffman, daughter of Rick and Kim Kauffman of Willow Street. Other finalists were Alaina Edwards, Erin Craul and Rebecca Shortes.
And then the rain came back, harder than before. Shortly after 8 p.m., midway through the queen competition, thick drops began falling, giving the contestants and crowd just enough time to flee for shelter before a deluge began in earnest.
Not only will Redding observe the FFA judging Links of London Heart Charm Necklace, Welk said, the ag secretary also will present the 2010 fair ambassador award.
"I've wanted to do this since my sister was involved, about five years ago. It was definitely something I could see myself doing Links of London Red White and Blue," Strawser said.
Today's highlights include the FFA judging contest at 9 a.m., dairy cow judging at 11 a.m. Links Charm Bracelets Wholesale, log sawing and bale throwing at 1 p.m. Links of London Charm, market goats at 4 p.m., square dance exhibition at 5 p.m., baby parade at 6 p.m., pig-catching contest and dairy beef judging at 7 p.m.
"He works behind the scenes and should be recognized," Welk said.
Also competing for the title Wednesday were Alyssa Leong Links Necklaces Outlet, Christa Murphy, Stacey Jordan, Kirstie Breneman, Emily Christie, Sarai Frick, Sarah Felpel and Ellen Raum. All contestants receive $25, and their sponsors receive $20.
She plans to attend a four-year college, with a dual major in writing and vocal performance.
The Friday schedule includes a spinning and weaving demonstration at 6 p.m., and sale of animals and calf roping at 6:30 p.m.
But the brief downpour around 5 p.m. Wednesday didn't last long enough to deter crowds packing the grounds for the opening of the 86th annual West Lampeter Community Fair.
"We were a little worried," fair president Don Welk said Wednesday. "But 10 minutes later Links of London Letter T Charm, the sun came out. The rain just settled the dust."
